Surprise Tornado
South Bend, IN
06/23/19
An unexpected tornado hit South Bend/Mishawaka, IN this evening causing damaging to multiple buildings, uprooting trees, and knocking out power. Speaking with local law enforcement I am unaware of any injuries at this time. The tornado touched down less than a mile or so from my apartment complex. I hear tornado sirens and ran to the window to see a tornado tearing across a wooded area near my new apartment. I ran down to my car to track the storm but was stopped by damage and down powerlines. Video preview on the Weather Channel Digital.
Utility crews were working on restoring power to some locations, crews are working on clearing trees, and repairing roofs the day afterward. Most of the damage seems to be minimal for the most part with most of the damaging being done to trees, powerlines, and minor roof damage. The hardest hit area is the Growing Kids Learning Center where the roof was ripped off and some of the walls are not standing. A house behind the Growing Kids Learning Center sustained minor roof damage but the shed out back was totally destroyed. Thankfully, no kids were at the center yesterday.
